Brief pricking, heaviness or warmth can occur, but sharp persistent pain should be reported.
What does acupuncture actually feel like?
Treatment should not be intensely painful. Discuss fear before beginning.
Very fine needles
Acupuncture needles are solid and much finer than needles used for blood tests. Insertion may be barely noticed or briefly felt. Sensation varies with the area, tension, fatigue and individual sensitivity.
Expected and unwanted sensations
Heaviness, local numbness, warmth or a diffuse sensation may occur. Sharp, electrical or persistent pain should never be endured silently; ask for the needle to be adjusted or removed.
Ask for what you need
Tell the practitioner about needle fear or previous fainting. Starting with fewer points, lying down and receiving step-by-step explanations can make the experience more comfortable.
