A structured approach begins by describing insomnia and checking important causes.

In brief

Is the problem falling asleep, waking or daytime fatigue?

Describe the type of insomnia. Some signs need medical assessment.

01

Sleep is not one symptom

Difficulty falling asleep, repeated waking, early waking, unrefreshing sleep and daytime sleepiness are different patterns. A two-week sleep diary often provides useful clarity.

02

Look for related factors

Pain, anxiety, irregular hours, alcohol, caffeine, menopause, medication and sleep apnoea may contribute. Significant snoring, breathing pauses or dangerous sleepiness need medical assessment.

03

Measure without overinterpreting

If acupuncture is tried, track sleep latency, awakenings and morning function while continuing recognised sleep measures and advised treatment.
