Related traditions can differ in their history, study frameworks and clinical reasoning.
Are these simply two names for the same practice?
Both approaches share historical foundations. Classical often signals closer engagement with earlier texts and mechanisms.
A shared inheritance
Traditional Chinese Medicine, or TCM, commonly groups acupuncture, herbal medicine, dietetics, movement and manual methods. Classical Chinese medicine refers more directly to texts, schools and lineages that predate modern standardisation. They share many concepts without always organising diagnosis in the same way.
What classical changes
A classical approach often asks how a pattern developed through constitution, environment, emotions, sleep, digestion and time. The symptom matters, but it is placed inside a larger sequence. Two people with the same complaint may therefore receive different strategies.
The useful question
Ask about training, clinical reasoning, safety boundaries and coordination with conventional care. A responsible practitioner can explain uncertainty, refer to a physician when needed and never guarantee an outcome.
